Crash kills 68-year-old as police search for witnesses north of Caledon

A fatal incident closed Highway 401 east of Oshawa this morning.

The incident happened in the eastbound lanes of Highway 401 at Highway 418 around 5:35 a.m. today (July 4), OPP said in a post on X.

OPP said it was a fatal collision in the post but a spokesperson told insauga.com, it was a fatal incident on the highway.

All eastbound lanes at Courtice Road were expected to be closed for a few hours, police said.

Just after 10 a.m., OPP said all lanes had reopened.

In a press release posted later, OPP said a 61-year-old man was found without vital signs on Highway 401 eastbound at Highway 418 in Bowmanville.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no signs of foul play, police added.

The death was one of three fatal incidents on GTA highways this morning. A pedestrian died on the QEW in Niagara Region and there was another hit-and-run crash claimed the life of a woman on the Gardiner Expressway in Toronto.
