If setting off fireworks to mark special occasions or cultural days not already allowed under City of Oshawa bylaws is on your mind, there may be a way to make that happen.

City staff will be looking into amending the fireworks bylaw to allow “reasonable requests” to set off fireworks on private property for special events not currently covered by bylaws.

Current rules only allow the discharge of fireworks without a permit on Victoria Day, Canada Day and the Diwali celebration.

There was some discussion at Monday’s Council meeting on the dangers from private fireworks displays from last weekend’s Victoria Day holiday, with Councillor Rosemary McConkey saying she received “plenty of calls” about the noise and heard reports of injuries caused by the pyrotechnical displays.

Staff is expected to report back to Council on June 10.
