The Missssaugas of Scugog Island First Nation ratified changes to their election rules at a vote held Friday, with terms of office for elected officials switching from two years to four years.

The new law, which aligns with regulations in the First Nations Election Act (2014) and matches up with election terms for municipal councils across Ontario, will take effect after the upcoming election next June.

The switch follows election results on the issue December 13. The ‘yes’ supporters carried the vote by a 64-46 margin.

The first election for the First Nation was held in 1893, with terms generally between three and five years before the two-year term was adopted after the election of Ernest Edgar in 1955.

Kelly LaRocca has been Chief since 2013 and has been re-elected five times.
