Five teenagers have been arrested on various charges after a pair of guns were found in their car. The Special Investigations Unit is looking into the arrest following the car’s crash.
Durham Regional Police officers tried to pull over a suspicious car near Winchester Road West and Thornton Road North. The area sits on the border of Whitby and Oshawa near Highway 407.
However, the car instead sped off and the officers broke off the pursuit, police say. They found the car later in a ditch after a crash. The officers allege they found two guns in the car with illegal extended magazines.
Paramedics took three of the teens to hospital for minor injuries. A fourth was more seriously hurt and required treatment in a Toronto trauma centre. Following the crash, the SIU invoked its mandate. This requires them to investigate any occasion someone is killed or hurt in an interaction with police.
The five teens have been charged with a variety of charges including;
- fleeing police,
- possession of a restricted/prohibited firearm,
- possession of prohibited ammunition,
- occupying a car with a firearm,
- dangerous driving,
- driving without a licence,
- using a licence plate for the wrong car,
- driving without insurance,
- possession against a court order, and
- failure to comply with a release order
This is the second recent crash they are investigating Durham Police for after a wrong-way crash on Highway 401 which killed a three-month-old boy, his grandparents and the pursued suspect.
Police did not describe the teens or indicate which one was charged with what offences. They’ve said they are co-operating with the SIU and will not share more information about the crash. Anyone with information can call the Special Investigations Unit at 1-800-787-8529.
