Flavours of 5 South Indian states served at latest opening in Oshawa

For anyone craving bold spices, comforting curries and crispy dosas, Oshawa just got a fresh new addition to its food scene, and it’s bringing the flavours of five South Indian states under one roof.

Simply South, located at 472 Taunton Rd. W. officially opened its doors on April 11.

The menu is inspired by the distinct cuisines of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana, with each dish reflecting flavours from street-side favourites to homestyle classics.

There are tiffin and breakfast-style options, such as masala dosa (a crisp rice crepe filled with spiced potato), idli (steamed rice cakes), vada (savoury lentil fritters), poori (fried wheat bread served with curry), and variations like Nellore karam dosa (a spicy Andhra-style dosa).

Appetizers and snacks include Gobi 65 (deep-fried cauliflower in a tangy spice blend), onion pakora (crispy onion fritters), Mysore bonda (soft fried dumplings) and spicy chicken starters like Andhra chilli chicken.

Some of the mains include Chettinad paneer (paneer in a peppery Tamil Nadu-style gravy), Andhra mutton curry (slow-cooked goat curry), chicken korma (creamy cashew-based curry) and fish pulusu (tamarind-based coastal fish curry)

For side dishes or mains to pair with curries, the menu offers biryani and rice options such as Hyderabadi mutton biryani (fragrant rice cooked with spiced meat), cashew mushroom pulav (mildly spiced rice with cashews and mushrooms), and Guntur chicken fried rice (an Indo-Chinese fusion dish).

Drinks like mango lassi (a sweet yogurt smoothie) and Madras filter coffee (strong drip-brewed coffee with milk and sugar) are crowd favourites.

For those looking to end the meal on a sweet note, desserts include payasam (sweet milk pudding with vermicelli), gulab jamun with ice cream (fried dough balls soaked in syrup, served warm), rasamalai (cheese patties in sweet cream), and junnu (Andhra-style milk pudding).

According to its website, the restaurant was founded with the mission to share the rich culinary heritage of South India. It focuses on authentic recipes and warm hospitality, aiming to turn every meal into a cultural experience.

Oshawa marks the second opening for Simply South, following its Scarborough location, with Mississauga and Kitchener locations coming soon.

The Oshawa location is open daily from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
