Forged passport in bank leads to a dozen fraud charges in Pickering, Ontario

A Whitchurch-Stouffville man trying to open a bank account in Pickering with a forged Sri Lankan passport has been hit with a dozen fraud charges.

West Division officers responded to a fraud in progress call just before 11 a.m. Tuesday at a Scotiabank branch on Brock Road, north of Rossland Road. Durham Police say the man entered the bank and attempted to open an account using a Sri Lankan passport, which was determined to be fraudulent. Police arrived on scene and took him into custody without incident.

Kapilarusu Karunaneedi, 31, is charged with numerous offences, including two counts of possession of a forged document and two counts of attempted fraud under $5,000.

He was released on an Undertaking.
