Durham Police were out in full force in school zones across the region Tuesday and issued 40 tickets, which is considered a good day on the first day of school.

A post from DRPS said the low number of infractions from the Traffic Safety Team was an indication that drivers had “slowed down, were paying attention to crossing guards and stopped at stop signs. Keep up the good driving habits.”

Police also reminded drivers that despite the speed limit in school zones like Clarington being reduced to 30 km/hr, many incidents near schools are caused by distracted drivers, not speeders, and asked motorists to “put your devices down” when driving.

There were a few speeders nabbed by police on the day, however, including a driver in Oshawa who tried to pass two other cars on a double line curve on Simcoe Street ($110 fine, 3 demerit points) and the first speeder of the day, a driver in Ajax doing 72 km/hr in a 40 km/hr community safety zone ($474 fine, 4 demerit points).

The full numbers will be released next week.
