Durham Region has added four emergency shelters in Oshawa and Ajax as overnight shelters during this week’s cold weather alert.
There are shelters in place for the Region’s By-Name list and Co-ordinated Access System, as well as shelters for victims of violence, but these four warming shelters are added only during cold spells where the temperature hits -15 C or when the windchill is set to fall to -20 C.
The four overnight shelters are:
First Light Foundation of Hope (253 Simcoe Street South) Oshawa; DUO Overnight Drop-In Centre (454 Simcoe Street South) Oshawa; Ajax Library (55 Harwood Avenue South) Ajax; and CFOC Warming Centre 158 Hartwood Avenue South) Ajax.
The Region releases an extreme cold warning anytime temperatures are expected to fall below -15 C, or when the windchill is set to fall to -20 C. The warning is expected to be in place until Tuesday evening.
There are 113 beds available from four outreach groups in Durham among the overnight accommodation facilities. You can find a full list on the Regional website.
