Motorists and pedestrians in Durham Region should take extra caution Monday morning with periods of freezing rain expected, leading to slipper conditions across the region and school bus cancellations in the norhertn areas.

A low-pressure system is approaching southern Ontario and will bring a mixture of precipitation to Durham. Precipitation is expected to begin as freezing rain before transitioning to rain near midday from Pickering to Oshawa in the south, while the freezing rain will lead to ice build-up of 2 to 4 mm on some surfaces in Scugog, Uxbridge and Brock townships through early this afternoon.

School bus routes in zones 1, 2 and 3 in the northern parts of the region have been cancelled.

Freezing rain can lead to ice build-up on some surfaces and surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery. Take extra care when walking or driving in affected areas.

Areas closest to Lake Ontario are expected to receive mostly rain through this event.

Freezing rain warnings are issued when rain falling in sub-zero temperatures creates ice build-up and icy surfaces.
