Girls hockey coach Oshawa’s newest ‘Community Legend’

A longtime hockey coach who has helped transform hockey programs for girls in Oshawa is the 2024 Community Legend recipient.

Joanne Kozaroff was selected based on nominations from the community in recognition of her efforts in grow and strengthen girls’ hockey. Empowering young girls to pursue their passion for hockey, fostering the strengths of each child and building their confidence in girls has been at the core of Kozaroff’s teachings, which Oshawa Mayor Dan Carter said “aligns seamlessly” with the spirit of the Oshawa Community Legend Award.

“We are thrilled to recognize Coach Kozaroff for her ongoing commitment to empower and develop the future of her players and women’s hockey,” said Carter. “Congratulations on receiving the Community Legend Award and for your innovative approaches to support our community members and enhance our city.”

Kozaroff was at Oshawa Council Monday with her family to accept the award, which recognizes individuals and organizations whose everyday actions make a positive impact on Oshawa.

“Let’s celebrate our newest Community Legend whose actions have made a positive impact on our community and in the world of sports,” said Councillor John Gray, Chair of Community and Operations Services Committee. “We commend Coach Kozaroff for her devotion and leadership.”
