Investigators found a gun in a car that an allegedly impaired driver had just crashed into the guardrail in south Oshawa.

The driver crashed into the guardrail on Simcoe St. and Bloor St. around 5:30 p.m. on June 18, according to Durham Regional Police. After the crash, he pulled the car into a nearby shopping plaza. He exited the car in the plaza and it took three good Samaritans to keep him from getting back in.

The Samaritans held the man at bay until police arrived at which point the responding officers placed the man under arrest. During this arrest police claim they found a loaded handgun on the man with an illegal extended magazine.

Sethusan Nagenran, 27 of Ajax, has been charged with nine offences including impaired driving and firearms-related charges. He remains in custody until a bail hearing.

Police said they wished to “thank the community members whose quick actions took an impaired driver off our roads. If you suspect an impaired driver, please call 9-1-1.”
