A handgun with a large over-capacity drum magazine was discovered in Oshawa after a brief chase with helicopter support.

Durham Police officers tried to pull a driver over around 9:30 p.m. on Sept. 14, the service said. However, they allege the driver refused to stop and instead sped off.

The officers called in the Air1 police helicopter which frequently patrols the downtown in the evening. The chopper quickly found the car parked a short distance from the attempted traffic stop.

As the officers approached the car, the driver ran off. He was quickly arrested and police found the loaded handgun with a prohibited overcapacity drum magazine. The investigation also discovered the car had been reported stolen.

Quintin Campbell, 20 of Oshawa, is charged with

  • possession of a loaded firearm,
  • possess of firearm with no licence,
  • dangerous driving,
  • occupying a car with firearm,
  • flight from police,
  • possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000,
  • firearm possession against a court order, and
  • failure to comply with a release order

He remains in custody pending a bail hearing. The charges have not been proven in court.

“We will allege that this individual posed multiple threats to public safety by fleeing from police in a stolen car while armed with an illegal firearm loaded with an illegal drum magazine,” said Chief Peter Moriera, “My thanks to the officers involved in removing this dangerous person from our community.”
