An extended heat warning has been issued for Durham Region at least until Thursday.

Hot and humid conditions are expected to continue until the end of the week. A daytime high of at least 31°C with overnight temperatures above 20°C or greater is expected.

Humidex values of at least 40 are also in the forecast.

Hot and humid air can also bring deteriorating air quality and can cause the Air Quality Health Index to approach the high-risk category.

Cooling centres will be available at most City and Town Halls and most splash pads and city pools will enjoy extended hours.

The risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors.

Drink plenty of water even before you feel thirsty and seek a cool place such as a tree-shaded area, swimming pool, shower or bath, or air-conditioned spot like a public building.

Never leave people or pets inside a parked vehicle.
