Durham Region is expected to experience a heat wave starting tomorrow (July 4), with the humidex possibly reaching the high thirties to low forties.

Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for the region including Ajax, Pickering, Oshawa, Whitby, Uxbridge and Clarington.

Maximum temperatures could reach the high twenties to low thirties. The minimum temperatures are forecast to be in the high teens to low twenties.

The two- or three-day hot and humid event is expected to last Tuesday to Wednesday, and possibly into Thursday for eastern regions.

These hot and humid conditions are forecast to ease starting Wednesday night.

Hot and humid air can also bring deteriorating air quality, resulting in a higher risk rating  in the Air Quality Health Index, according to Environment Canada.

The agency recommends drinking plenty of water even if you’re not thirsty and staying in a cool place.

Heat warnings are issued when there is a potentially higher risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion, as a result of extremely high temperatures or humidity conditions.
