The special weather statement for the five lakeshore communities of Durham Region is still in place, with heavy rain expected Friday morning through the afternoon.

Rainfall amounts will be 25 to 50 mm, with locally higher amounts possible, from a low-pressure system bringing heavy rain to parts of the GTA and southwestern Ontario.

The special weather statement is issued for residents in Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa and Clarington.

Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads and localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible. Widespread flooding is not anticipated but fast flowing water and flooding of low-lying areas and roadways may be expected in flood prone areas.

The Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority is asking all residents to stay away from all watercourses, shorelines, and structures such as bridges, culverts and dams. Increased wave activity, elevated water levels, fast flowing water, and slippery conditions along stream banks and Lake Ontario shorelines continue to make these locations extremely dangerous and parents are cautioned to remind children of the dangers.

The system is expected to move out of the region by Saturday morning.
