‘Hostile’ Ajax man fights police, tries to steal baton in Halloween parking lot incident in Whitby

A “belligerent and hostile” man is facing six charges – including assaulting a police officer and trying to steal his baton – after an attempted car theft in Whitby on Halloween.
Durham Police officers responded to a call near Thickson Road and Rossland Road just before 1 a.m. Friday morning about a man that was attempting to get into someone’s vehicle at a gas station. When police arrived the man became “belligerent and hostile” and as officers attempted to take him into custody, he began fighting, “striking an officer and attempting to disarm them of their baton.”
Tyrrell Dasrat, 33, of Ajax, is charged with resisting arrest, obstruction, assaulting a peace officer, attempting to take weapon off a police officer, being intoxicated in a public place and breach of release order.
He was held for a bail hearing.
