Huge clothing and outdoor equipment store set to open new location in Whitby

Outdoorsy shoppers might be pleased to hear that Mountain Equipment Company (better known as MEC) is opening a new location in Whitby later this month.
Today, the company announced that the store, best known for offering clothing and gear for hikes, bicycle rides and campouts, will open on July 20 and host grand opening celebrations from July 26-28.
“MEC has been providing great outdoor gear at fair prices for over 50 years, and we’re thrilled to bring this commitment directly to the people of Whitby and the surrounding Durham region”, said MEC CEO Peter Hlynsky in a statement.
“The area is thriving with active families and outdoor enthusiasts and we’re happy to provide them with the best outdoor gear, know-how and inspiration under one roof. From top name brands like Patagonia, Salomon, Osprey and keen to our own much-loved in-house MEC label products.”
The 20,000-square-foot store will be located at 1-1650 Victoria St. E. and will also offer a full-service bike shop.
The company says the grand opening event will kick off at 10 a.m. on July 26 and the first 50 people through the doors will receive a tote bag and the opportunity to win a $1,000 MEC gift card.
The event will also include a photo booth, workshops, activations, a local DJ, drinks from Burdock Brewery, and more. In a news release, the brand said the store will be run by staff with knowledge of camping, hiking, paddling, travel, and more.
The Whitby location will be MEC’s seventh standalone store in Ontario and the 23rd in Canada.
