Police closed the westbound lanes of Hwy 401 through Ajax Sunday for a 'sudden death' investigation

The westbound lanes of Highway 401 in Ajax were completely shut down for nearly five hours Sunday afternoon for what police are calling a “sudden death” investigation.

The OPP’s Highway Safety Division tweeted just before noon Sunday that the westbound lanes between Salem Road and Westney Road would be closed for an investigation related to an incident at the Harwood Street bridge.

The lanes reopened at about 4:30 p.m.

Police did not provide any details, but a motorist said on social media he was an eyewitness to seeing a man fall to his death to the highway below.

The OPP is asking anyone with dashcam or witnesses to call the Whitby office at 905-668-3388.
