An impaired driver was arrested with a blood-alcohol content more than four times the legal limit, police say.

Durham Regional Police officers on patrol found the car stopped in the road shortly before 11 p.m. on Feb 24. The car was still running. The car was damaged and had multiple flat tires. When the officers approached the car, they allegedly found a man in the driver’s seat “unconscious and slumped over.”

The officers noted several signs of impairment and it took multiple attempts to wake the driver, police say. Once he came to, he insisted he was not driving the car even though he was found in the driver’s seat. The man was arrested without incident.

When the man blew a breathalyzer test his blood-alcohol content was between 300 and 350 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood across three tests. The legal limit in 80 milligrams.

A 39-year-old man from Pickering is charged with impaired driving, driving over 80 milligrams, driving while suspended and breaking a probation order. His licence has been suspended for another 90 days and his car has been impounded for a week.
