Concert to Feed ther Need Durham

Musicians from across Durham Region will be gathering at Oshawa’s Biltmore Theatre Sunday afternoon to help feed their neighbours in need, with all proceeds headed for Feed the Need Durham.

The Concert to Feed the Need in Durham, presented by a group of Durham Rotary clubs, has been an annual event since 2018, with the concert raising more than $120,000 since then, including more than $31,000 last year.

Feed the Need, which collects and distributes food and other essentials to more than 65 member agencies such as food banks and shelters, estimates that for every dollar donated, they can distribute two meals to those in need through its network.

“It’s wonderful to see how musicians of all genres from across the region come together on stage to help feed their neighbours in need,” said Joe Solway of Bowmanville Rotary, who is producing the show. “I’ve gotten to know many of them over the years and they always look forward to being part of it. I always say that musicians are among the most generous people anywhere.”

According to the latest Hunger Count Report by Food Banks Canada, the need has never been greater. In March 2024 there were more than two million visits to food banks in Canada — the highest number in history, with food bank usage nearly doubling over the past five years.

On December 8 at 2 p.m. musicians from across the region will assemble in downtown Oshawa to try and make a difference.

“We’re excited to once again be partnering with Rotary Clubs of Durham for the Concert,” said Feed the Need in Durham CEO Ben Earle. “With unprecedented demand for food banks in our community, the need for an event that brings us together with great musicians to help our neighbours has never been greater.”

The lineup runs the gamut of musical genres, from country to classical, and features well-known artists from across Durham Region, including Juno nominee Kalista Wilson, Cale Crowe, Andy Earle, New Moon Junction, Alicia Robicheau, David Shewhuk and Matt Doran.

“It’s gratifying to be able to help feed our neighbours in need.” added Solway. “The fact that so many of our clubs in Durham are working together is a testament to the power of Rotary. And of course I’m grateful to all the musicians who step up year after year to make this show happen.”
