An Oshawa man was arrested while allegedly driving a stolen car in the city.

A Durham Regional Police officer picked up the licence plate of a stolen car on their Automatic Licence Plate Reader near Mary St and Hillcroft St. shortly before 8 p.m. on March 7.

This recently added sensor scans all plates the cops come across and checks if they’ve been flagged as stolen. These readers were largely funded by a provincial grant in 2022 and have contributed to numerous arrests in the time since.

This time, the officer called for backup which arrived in multiple other cruisers. These cruisers surrounded the car and boxed it in.

A driver and passenger were allegedly inside and were arrested on scene. The alleged driver was later charged, but the female passenger was released unconditionally.

Rhain Duncan, 21 of Oshawa, is charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000. He has since been released with conditions.
