An Oshawa man faces numerous charges related to making and sharing child pornography.
Durham Police confirmed they raided the home of Christopher Jackson, 30, on July 31 after they began to suspect he was making the material. They allege he used the Telegram messenger app under user names: “C Ja” and “Nomey6969″ to spread the images.
Telegram is an end-to-end encrypted app which has faced a great deal of criticism about the proliferation of illegal pornography and an unwillingness to cooperate with investigative authorities around the world. CEO Pavel Durov was recently arrested in France for the service’s lack of moderation.
Police arrested the suspect during the raid for breaches of both the Sex Offender Information Registration Act and Christopher’s Law, which also pertains to sex offender registration.
Investigators also seized a variety of electronics during their raid. They said the devices contained a “multitude of child pornographic content” and plan to travel to abuse children.
Jackson was released after the July raid but was arrested again on Aug. 30 to receive further charges. He remains in custody until a bail hearing. In total, he’s now charged with:
- possession of child pornography,
- making child pornography,
- importing, or distributing child pornography,
- agreeing to commit a sexual crime against someone under 16,
- accessing child pornography,
- five counts of breaching an order from a sexual offence conviction, and
- eight counts of failure to comply with probation
The charges have not been proven in court.
“Police are concerned there may be other victims and are requesting anyone with information to come forward,” they said. Anyone with information can call police at 1-888-579-1520 ext. or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
