Man reportedly armed with a knife punches police officer during confrontation in Bowmanville

A man has been taken into police custody after a struggle ensued between four officers outside a home in Bowmanville this morning.

Durham Regional Police responded to Liberty Street North around 2:30 a.m., after being alerted by paramedics of a man brandishing a knife and behaving aggressively towards them, while they were helping another person.

Police say, they attempted to initiate a conversation with the man outside of the house.

However, the situation escalated as the man grew agitated and lunged at one of the officers, allegedly assaulting him with punches to the face.

A physical struggle ensued, but the suspect was eventually apprehended.

Additionally, two more officers sustained minor injuries during the arrest.

Investigators have not confirmed if a knife was recovered at any point before, during, or after the arrest.

Gary Gould, 42, and a resident of Bowmanville faces multiple assault charges including assaulting a peace officer.

Authorities have not provided an image or further details regarding Gould’s identity.

He was held for a bail hearing.
