The province’s Special Investigations Unit has been called in after an armed man was seriously injured during a confrontation with police at the Pickering police station on Saturday afternoon.
The SIU investigates whenever weapons are drawn by police officers in altercations with the public. In this case, the 29-year-old man, who was brandishing an air pistol, was Tasered by two officers at the front desk after an initial and unsuccessful attempt to subdue him.
Police say the man entered the West Division police station in Pickering armed with an air pistol and “discharged projectiles.” Two officers attempted to arrest the man, during which both officers fired their conducted energy weapons.
They were still not successful in subduing the man and after continued efforts were made to bring him into custody – during which time the man shot the air pistol “multiple times” – the suspect barricaded himself in the station’s public restroom.
The man was eventually arrested and taken to hospital, where he was diagnosed with a serious injury. The two officers suffered minor injuries.
Three investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case by the SIU.
The SIU is asking anyone who may have information about this investigation, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online at https://siu.on.ca/en/appeals.php
