More than 1,800 new and repaired affordable homes coming to Ajax, Oshawa, Pickering and Whitby

The federal government has announced a $31 million investment to build and renovate more than 1,800 homes in Durham Region.

MPPs Ya’ara Saks (York Centre and Mental Health Minister),  Rechie Valdez (Mississauga—Streetsville and Small Business Minister), Ryan Turnbull (Whitby) and Jennifer O’Connell (Pickering-Uxbridge) and Michael Coteau (Don Valley East) announced the measure on Aug. 1 at the non-profit housing building at 1050 Simcoe Street South in Oshawa.

The site is home to Conant Place, which will receive $14 million to build an additional 54 senior’s homes to the 43 already there. In total, the region will get 64 brand-new affordable units and 1,774 homes will be renovated.

The funds are coming from the Federal Affordable Housing Fund, a $14 billion pool to fund low-interest or forgivable loans and contributions to municipalities.

The program targets vulnerable communities including; women and children fleeing family violence, seniors, Indigenous peoples, people living with disabilities, those with mental health or addiction issues, veterans, and young adults. So far 146,000 new units and the repair of over 286,000 units have been announced nationwide.

The investment breaks down as;

  • $14.5 million for the Oshawa Conant Place Expansion
  • $12 million for repairs at 1,200 units across Durham Region
  • $2.7 million for 10 units at Oshawa’s Harmony Ridge Riverside
  • $1.7 million for 574 units in Ajax’s Ashley Manor
