The Ontario Special Investigations Unit has been called in after a man crashed his motorcycle into a SUV Saturday evening, sending the rider to hospital with serious injuries.

There is no word if the man was involved in a police chase at the time of the collision or why the SIU was called in.

Durham Police were on the scene at Rossland Road and Ravenscroft Road just after 6 p.m. Saturday and reported only that the motorcycle rider fled the area after colliding with the SUV. Officers, with the assistance of Air1 and the K9 Unit, located the driver hiding near a ravine and took him into custody.

The man suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries and was transported to a Toronto trauma centre.

The man, whose name was not released, is charged with obstructing a peace officer, leaving the scene of an accident, driving with no plates, license or insurance and failing to stop for a red light.

The SIU has invoked its mandate, leaving Durham Police unable to release more details on this incident.

Update: However, police later released footage of the search taken from Air 1. The footage begins with the motorcyclist already hiding near the ravine off Rossland Road. The attempt quickly proves fruitless as the helicopter on a thermal camera.

The chopper reported the man’s position to officers on the ground and guided them down the hill. As the group of officers reached the man’s position, along with a K-9 unit, he jumped up and again tried to run.

He ran straight into the ravine with the K-9 dog hot on his heels. He tried to wade across the water but was stopped and arrested on the far bank.

Anyone with questions or information about this incident is asked to contact the Special Investigations Unit at 1-800-787-8529.
