Two men, including one from Oshawa, have been charged with the murder of a fellow inmate at the Lindasy Superjail.

The victim, Andre Taillefer, was found in his cell severely injured of the Central East Correctional Centre (colloquially known as the Lindsay Superjail) on July 17, according to Kawartha Lakes Police.

Paramedics rushed him to the Ross Memorial Hospital in Lindsay. From there he was airlifted to Kingston General Hospital. The Kawartha Lakes Police launched an assault investigation at the time.

However, on July 22, Taillefer succumbed to his injuries, sparking a homicide investigation. On July 24, they charged Jason Larocque, 34 of Oshawa, and Hunter Owen, 28 of Newmarket, with first-degree murder.

Both accused attended court on July 24. Ontario’s chief coroner will also investigate Taillefer’s death.

The Lindsay Superjail is a medium/maximum security provincial facility which can house almost 1,200 inmates.

It recently became subject to a Coroner’s Inquest due to the death of four inmates; Abdelaziz Ibrahim, Thomas Neumann, Stanley Saunders and Adam Wood, from drug overdoses from 2020 to 2022.

In late 2023, another inquest was opened into the 2016 death of Soleiman Faqiri, 30, in the prison. This inquest ruled Faqiri’s death a homicide by several corrections officers’ inappropriate use of force.
