National Day of Action for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls

October 4 is National Day of Action for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.

The day serves as a solemn reminder of the ongoing violence and systemic injustices faced by Indigenous women and girls across the country, the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation said, pointing out that according to Statistics Canada data compiled in the first 15 years of this century, homicide rates for Indigenous women were nearly six times higher than for non-Indigenous women.

Oshawa rockers Crown Lands, who have championed Indigenous rights in many of their songs, released ‘End of the Road’ in 2020, a track about the Highway of Tears in B.C. and the people – mostly indigenous women – who have gone missing there.

The song is an outcry for awareness and action surrounding the colonial horrors of the missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and two-spirits that still haunt Indigenous communities today.
