National Day of Mourning today in Oshawa and across the country

Today the City of Oshawa, as well as other municipalities around Durham and across the nation observes National Day of Mourning.

Flags at municipal facilities will fly at half-mast today and in Oshawa the City will lower the Day of Mourning Flag at City Hall in honour and remembrance of workers who have lost their lives or suffered injury or illness on the job or due to a work-related tragedy.

“Today is an important day for our community and country as we reflect on the lives lost and injured in our workplaces,” said Oshawa Mayor Dan Carter. “Together on National Day of Mourning, our thoughts are with the families, friends and co-workers who have lost loved ones and colleagues on the job.”

Now an international observance as a day of mourning for workers killed, injured or made ill by their job, the declaration of April 28 as the Day of Mourning began in Canada. On April 28, 1991, Canada recognized its first National Day of Mourning for Persons Killed or Injured in the Workplace.
