New COVID cases in Durham down to 15; two more deaths at Oshawa’s Hillsdale Estates since Thursday

Two more deaths at Hillsdale Estates Long Term Care Home in Oshawa have been reported, bringing the fatality count to seven since the outbreak was first declared August 26.
One death was reported late on Thursday while the other was reported Friday.
The COVID-19 new case numbers across Durham Region have improved since Thursday’s total of 55 new cases was declared. Since then, Durham has recorded 33, 26 and 15 daily cases. With numbers across Ontario also falling (from 821 Saturday to 610 today) there is hope of getting the fourth wave of the virus under control.
Of the new cases in Durham, Oshawa reported zero new cases Sunday after recording 11 the previous day, Whitby had the most Sunday with five new cases while the ten recorded by Ajax was the highest total on Friday.
Brock Township has not reported a new COVID-19 case in more than a week.
There are still 191 active cases of the virus in Durham, but just one person in hospital.
Durham’s two school boards are reporting four outbreaks at local schools, as well as two outbreaks at day care centres.
The schools and day care centres with reported outbreaks are:
- Leo Cleary CS in Courtice
- Elizabeth Seaton CS in Pickering
- Valley Farm PS in Pickering
- West Lynde PS in Whitby
- George’s School and Day Care (Ajax)
- Mary of Leuca Day Care (Courtice)
Bay Ridges Long Term Care in Pickering has also declared an outbreak, with two residents isolating.
