Regional Councillor Willie Woo (left), Councillor Margaret Zwart, Councillor Lloyd Rang, Regional Councillor Granville Anderson, Councillor Sami Elhajjeh and Mayor Adrian Foster announce new outdoor upgrades at South Courtice Arena.

Two tennis courts, an accessible outdoor fitness area and paved walkways will be installed at South Courtice Arena by the end of the summer, with the existing basketball court also being resurfaced and converted into a multi-skills court, with both basketball key and hockey crease line paintings.

“As Clarington grows, we want to make sure that our community spaces offer our residents all the resources they need to lead a healthy, active lifestyle,” said Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster. “These new outdoor amenities show our commitment to providing diverse recreational opportunities for residents of all ages and abilities.”

The new outdoor fitness area will be built on an accessible rubberized surface, suitable for people using wheelchairs and other mobility aids. The new equipment was paid for in part by the Government of Canada Healthy Communities Initiative.

As part of this important community project, crews will install lighting around the tennis courts and along the paved pathways. The walkway to the leash-free dog park will also be reconstructed to improve accessibility.

Temporary fencing will be erected around the site for the duration of the project. The new outdoor amenities are expected to open to the public this September.
