The number of new COVID-19 cases in Durham Region dropped to 19 Sunday after a two-day burst of 68 new cases on Friday and Saturday.

It is unclear how many of the new cases are related to the outbreak at a youth basketball tournament in Oshawa the week prior but Oshawa, with 10, was the primary driver of Friday’s new case total of 35. Ajax, with 13, represented nearly 40 per cent of Saturday’s new case total of 33.

Oshawa (4) and Ajax (3) are responsible for all seven COVID-19 cases that are currently in hospital, with one Oshawa patient remaining in ICU.

There are a total of 145 active cases in Durham and 230 confirmed cases of the Delta variant, of which nine are active.

Durham Region does not reveal the percentage of new cases stemming from unvaccinated persons, as Ontario does.

Fully vaccinated Durham Residents represent nearly 74 per cent of the 12-plus population while Oshawa – the least vaccinated municipality in Durham – is seeing its numbers rise to 69.9 per cent.
