Northumberland, Peterborough and Clarington mourn former MP after cancer battle

Former Northumberland-Peterborough South MP and longtime community volunteer and entrepreneur Kim Rudd has died after a four-year battle with ovarian cancer.

Rudd, a 2011 RBC Canadian Women Entrepreneur Award recipient and former owner of the Cook’s Day School and Willis College in Cobourg, served as MP for the newly created riding from 2015 to 2019.

Northumberland-Peterborough South takes in Newcastle and some of the lands to the north of the community in Clarington.

Rudd died Tuesday at Ed’s House, a hospice in Cobourg.

Rudd was involved in numerous local organizations in the Cobourg area and served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Natural Resources and on the standing committee on finance during her time in Ottawa. Near the end of her term in office she was named chair of the Parliamentary Health Research Caucus.

Outside of politics she was a volunteer with charitable and sports organizations in Northumberland, served as the president of the Northumberland Central Chamber of Commerce and chair of the Physician Recruitment and Retention Committee of Northumberland. She became a consultant for the Canadian Nuclear Association following her election defeat in 2019.
