A Durham Regional Police officer required medical attention after he was exposed to fentanyl during an arrest in Oshawa.

The officer responded to a trespasser in a business near Simcoe Street South and Albany Street around 4 p.m. on Dec. 22. When they arrived, they learned the trespasser had been previously banned from the business but had returned.

As they arrested the suspect, the officer was exposed to fentanyl. Durham Police did not specify the nature of the exposure. The officer was taken to Lakeridge Oshawa Hospital for treatment and medically cleared.

The officer was later medically cleared. “his incident highlights just one of the many unknown dangers our officers face each and every day while keeping our community safe,” police wrote.
