One dead after multi-vehicle crash on highway 401 in Whitby, Ontario

A driver has died while another driver was taken to the hospital with injuries following a three-vehicle crash on Highway 401 in Whitby just after midnight February 3.

The OPP reports that the collision took place in the westbound lanes of Highway 401 near Thickson Road.

Investigators have not indicated if the driver died at the scene or was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

The driver in one of the other vehicles involved in the accident was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

It is unknown how many other passengers were in each vehicle at the time of the incident.

Police have not disclosed the identities, ages, or places of residence of the driver who died, including any of the other occupants in the vehicles involved in the crash.

The lanes moving westbound on Highway 401 and Thickson Road were closed off for several hours during investigations.

As of 7 a.m., on Saturday police reopened the roadways to motorists.
