Summer travel season at Pearson in Mississauga.

A suspected bank fraud in Oshawa has led to charges for a Chinese national on his return to Canada.

The man went to a bank at Simcoe Street North and Windfields Farm Drive West in north Oshawa on Jan. 11, according to Durham Police.

The newly developed area is home to several apartment buildings and commercial plazas. There are a few banks in the vicinity including a TD and a Scotiabank. Police did not specify which the man went to.

He deposited a $47,000 cheque, police say, and withdrew a large amount of cash. He then moved much of the money to other accounts over e-transfer. Later investigation determined the cheque was fraudulent.

Though police tried to track the man down, he managed to flee the country before his arrest. However, on Aug. 2 he tried to enter Canada again through Mississauga’s Pearson Airport. He flew in from the United States and Canada Border Security Agency officers detained him on arrival.

The CBSA contacted Durham Police regarding the suspect. They have since charged Yuanping Lin, 26 of China, with a single count of fraud. He remains in custody until a bail hearing.
