Oshawa's Elijah Fisher preparing to slam it down against Slovenia

A huge game from Oshawa’s Elijah Fisher helped Canada trounce Slovenia 90-69 in Debrecen, Hungary Wednesday in an elimination game at the FIBA U19 World Cup.

Canada will meet Turkey, who defeated Egypt 73-52 Wednesday and is ranked 16th in the world, in a Friday quarter-final match, with semi-finals set for Saturday and the final on Sunday.

Fisher led all players in scoring (18), rebounds (11) and assists (4) in sparking the Canadian victory in the round of 16 match, one day after a disappointing 11-point loss to France in the squad’s final match in group action.

Sixth-ranked Canada fell to 1-2 and third place in the tough Group A, behind France (#4) and unbeaten (and world #2) Spain with Tuesday’s loss, but rebounded with a strong effort against the Slovenians, who were 2-1 in Group B, losing only to the top-ranked Americans.

Fisher, who will be entering his sophomore season with Texas Tech in the fall, is now third in scoring for Canada after four games behind 6’10” Miami Hurricanes centre Michael Nwoko of Milton and Xaivian Lee, who led Canada in scoring in the loss to France Tuesday with 15.

Fisher tops the Canadian team in rebounds per game (7.5), assists (3.0) and efficiency rating (56.0).
