A free tree giveaway by the City of Oshawa has already ‘sold’ out, with the program running out of trees to give away a week early due to “overwhelming interest.”

Residents who were able to successfully register will be contacted about picking up their free tree September 23.

Registration for the program, an initiative by the Oshawa Environmental Advisory Committee to expand the city’s tree canopy, was to run until September 15.

Three species were available for selection:

  • Paper Birch – so named for the tree’s thin white bark, which often peels in paper-like layers from the trunk.
  • Sugar Maple – the national tree of Canada which is a large deciduous tree with yellowish-green leaves.
  • White Oak – a long-lived oak species, native to eastern and central North America.

With a limited availability the program was first come, first served but with so many residents and property owners showing interest registration was closed early.

Successful registrants will be notified of the drive-through pick-up time and location. During tree pick up, residents are asked to remain in the car and open their trunk for the attendant to load the tree. This event will run rain or shine.
