It was a steep price to pay but the Oshawa Generals have their stud shutdown defender to take another crack at the OHL title.

The Generals sent Brady Smith, their first-round pick of a year ago, and eight draft picks to Sault Ste. Marie for Team Canada defenceman Andrew Gibson.

Gibson, an assistant captain for the Greyhounds and a Nashville Predator draft pick, is in the midst of his third OHL season.
Originally selected in the fourth round of the 2021 OHL draft, Gibson has 23 goals and 49 assists while playing a shutdown role with the Soo.

Gibson, 19, was also part of Canada’s team at the 2025 World Junior Hockey Going the other was Smith, who has Championships in Ottawa.

“I am very excited to get things going in Oshawa,” said the 6’3″, 210-lb right shot defender. “I have heard nothing but positive remarks from people connected to the organization.”

Gibson joins a defence group that includes Leafs’ first round pick Ben Danford and Luca Marrelli who leads all OHL defenceman in scoring.

Smith is the main piece going the other way in the deal. The rookie has played in 37 games in Oshawa, picking up seven points including his first two OHL goals.

The Greyhounds also acquired a 2026 fourth round selection in the OLL draft; a second, third, two fourths and a sixth-round pick in 2027; and a sixth and seventh round picks in the 2028 draft.

The club already has a Brady Smith on the roster (acquired in the 2023 draft), which will likely mean some challenging nights for the local broadcast team.
