After two disappointing losses to start the weekend that pushed them out of a short-lived playoff position, the Oshawa Generals exploded for ten goals against the cellar-dwelling Niagara Ice Dogs Monday afternoon to not only re-take the last playoff spot but vault all the way to seventh place, one point ahead of the slumping Kingston Frontenacs.

All three teams have 15 games remaining.

Oshawa and Niagara traded goals in the first to head into the second tied at 2s and Oshawa pulled ahead 5-4 after two periods. The Generals opened the third with three straight goals in the first six-and-a -half minutes to extend the lead to 8-4 but had to fight off a late Niagara challenge before Beckett Sennecke, with his second, got the insurance goal and Stuart Rolofs – also with his second of the game – iced it with an empty net goal.

Rookie Sennecke has his best game in the OHL with five points while Luca D’Amato chipped in with four. Dylan Roobroek, Rolofs, Ryder McIntyre and Ryan Gagnier all enjoyed three point games.

Zackary Lavoie led all scorers with six points on three goals and three assists but was minus three on the day as defence was left in the dressing room for this one.

Oshawa lost 5-2 to the league-leading Ottawa 67s Friday night and salvaged a point in a 5-4 shootout loss to Guelph in former number one goalie Patrick Leaver’s return to the Tribute Centre.

Niagara would do the Generals a favour by thumping Sudbury 6-2 Sunday night in the franchise’s 1,000th game and Peterborough, Oshawa’s main rival since the reformed OHA’s first season in 1964, did Oshawa two huge favours with a 3-0 win over Kingston Friday and a 4-0 blanking of Sudbury Monday.

Oshawa’s next action is Friday night at the Tribute Centre against, you guessed it, the Peterborough Petes.
