The good news is the daily count of new COVID-19 cases on the weekend dropped considerably from Friday’s total of 792, with 546 and 537 new cases reported on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

However, with the lack of antigen tests available and the message being delivered by Lakeridge Health to stay home and isolate if you think you have the virus, but your symptoms are mild, it is likely the numbers are very much underreported.

The active case count in Durham stands at 7,090.

Oshawa has taken over as the region’s COVID hotspot, with the city leading the new case totals for the last three days, with 166, 145 and 160 respectively, for a three-day total of 471. Ajax, with 350 (including 143 Friday) and Whitby (348) also reported high numbers of positive cases.

The number of outbreaks in retirement homes and long-term care homes in Durham is still high at 36, with Glen Hill Strathaven (14 residents isolating), Hillsdale Estates (12), Port Perry Place (7) and Westney Gardens (5) reporting the largest outbreaks.

There are five outbreaks in day cares and six workplace outbreaks.

As of today there are 126 hospitalizations in Durham Region related to the COVID-19 virus.
