Oshawa Tourism launch takes off

Oshawa Tourism launched its new website Tuesday evening at an event at All or Nothing Brewhouse that attracted stakeholders and various dignitaries, all clamouring to see what the fuss was all about.

A division of the Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce, Oshawa Tourism was born out of an idea that then city has many stories to tell, and nobody save Durham Region and its Durham Tourism division to tell it.

The website is chock-full of stories about what to do in town, top picks for getting pampered, dining options, craft beer destinations, entertainment, arts & culture ideas, music venues, shopping, a guided ‘movie tour, the best dog parks, upcoming events and where to get the best seats in the house for the Oshawa Generals (hint: they’re all good seats).

And if you don’t have time to read all the stories you can watch the introductory video, which was shot using 49 locations all around town.

Kristi Licsi, who wasn’t feeling well and couldn’t attend the launch, said Durham Tourism had been doing a “wonderful job” of promoting Oshawa in the past but was time for people in Oshawa to start telling stories that went beyond Parkwood Estate and the City’s junior hockey team.

“We wanted to show both our local community and visitors to this area that there are so many wonderful tourism assets right here in Oshawa,” she said. “Our new digital practice is dedicated to amplifying the profile of local businesses and events in our vibrant city by sharing stories and experiences from our Oshawa Tourism Ambassadors, and by providing innovative opportunities for business collaboration.”

Hailey Wright, Oshawa’s Director of Economic Development said the new website will “truly bring the city to light” on the global tourism stage while giving local businesses an opportunity to customize the site to best promote their services.

Jason King, the Oshawa chamber’s CEO, has plenty of experience talking up Oshawa’s virtues having promoted concerts in town when he was just 15.

Central Counties Tourism Association, a group representing tourism organizations in Durham and York regions as well as Caledon and parts of Wellington, Grey and Simcoe counties, gave Oshawa Tourism its initial push with start-up funding and some valuable advice.

King was advised to remember Oshawa’s blue collar roots and its long-established traditions in sectors like music and the auto industry when telling its stories to the world.

“Oshawa is what it is. Don’t force it and keep it real.”
