Oshawa wants public’s help on expanded Elena Park

The City of Oshawa is redeveloping the newly expanded Elena Park south of downtown and wants to hear the public’s thoughts on playground equipment and accessibility features.
The Elena Park conceptual plan includes a new playground, site furniture and accessible pathway and residents and business owners can provide feedback by completing a form online at Connect Oshawa or on paper at Service Oshawa at City Hall.
Feedback will be received until noon on November 4.
Oshawa expropriated lands behind the St. George’s Ukrainian Seniors’ Residence on First Avenue last year and has spent $140,000 since then on land surveys, an environmental assessment and design work.
The land purchase increased the size of the park by about 150 per cent.
The senior’s residence was the former South Simcoe School, which was a troubled inner city school until the arrival of Sandra Dean as principal in 1991. Dean helped transform the school over the next eight years, earning respect from the community and national recognition for the achievements of her students.
In 1999 the Durham Board of Education merged the school with E.A Lovell School to form Village Union and South Simcoe closed. The school was then converted into a residence for seniors run by the nearby St. George’s Ukrainian Church.
