Oshawa’s DeRo TFC Academy U16 soccer team had to take the long way ‘round and had to battle the elements and a two-week delay to get there, but ‘there’ is where the club will be next weekend at the Ontario Cup championship game.
Their opponents will be the Oakville Blue Devils, the team that defeated Oshawa in July in early tournament action, forcing the academy squad to go through the ‘B’ side of the bracket to reach the semi-final on August 28 against the Scarborough Rangers.
That game was called off due to lightning with Oshawa leading 1-0, forcing a postponement to September 11 at L’amoreaux Sports Complex in Scarborough.
In Saturday’s re-scheduled match, Oshawa spotted Scarborough a 1-0 lead before scoring twice to go into the break up 2-1, and they added four more in a dominant second half to win in a walk, 6-1.
Myles Morgan led the winners with a hattrick, with Joshua Geddes adding a pair. Xavier Hunter had the other goal.
The final will be played at the Soccer Centre Stadium in Vaughan September 18.
Oshawa is trying to become the first local club to with the U16 Ontario Cup. Ajax sides won back-to-back titles in 2009 and 2010, while the Oakville Blue Devils took the top prize back in 1994.
