A happy belated birthday to Ontario Tech University, which was founded by Charter in the Ontario Legislature on June 27, 2002.

Born as the University of Ontario Institute of Technology by the passage of Bill 109, the University of Ontario Institute of Technology Act, 2002, the science and technology-based school accepted its first crop of students in September 2003, and was a part of the Ontario government’s initiative to create more spaces in post-secondary institutions for the flood of double cohort students in 2003 with the elimination of Grade 13.

Re-branded as Ontario Tech in 2019, the school began life with 947 students. Total enrolment hit 5,000 in 2007 and is now 10,000-plus.

Construction on the university’s first buildings, designed by Diamond Schmitt Architects, began in 2002.
