Whitby Fire and Emergency Services has selected their annual Junior Chief, a sixth grader with “outstanding knowledge” of fire safety.

Colin Lepre of Chris Hadfield Public School was chosen from among his fellow graduates of Whitby’s Junior Firefighter Summer Camp. The fire department chose Lepre due to his “outstanding knowledge of fire safety, active engagement, and willingness to assist his peers.”

Due to his appointment, Lepre was granted a ride in a fire truck to Whitby’s Fire Station #5 after a special presentation at his school. He went on to learn how firefighters extinguish vehicle fires, techniques for auto extrication, and the responsibilities of a Fire Chief.

As Junior Chief, he also had the unique opportunity to lead and direct the response to a (mock) emergency and experience several firefighting roles.

Unlike the similar Junior Police Chief role, which only lasts for the day, Lepre’s position will continue for about a year. He’ll make several appearances over the next several months at various community events.

Whitby’s Senior Fire Chief Michael Hickey says his junior counterpart “embodies the qualities we seek in a Junior Fire Chief. His unwavering commitment to fire safety and his enthusiasm for learning make him an outstanding candidate for this position. We are excited to welcome him to our team for the upcoming year.”

Lepre himself added his selection, “is a real honour and I look forward to learning alongside the Whitby Fire Department this year.”
