Watersport enthusiasts in Pickering might be able to rent paddle-operated equipment next summer.
Recently, the city announced that it has been in contact with vendors interested in providing paddle sport rental services at Rotary Frenchman’s Bay West Park. The park is located on the southwest shore of Frenchman’s Bay on Beachpoint Promenade, off the south end of West Shore Drive.
On its website, the municipality describes the park, which was extensively reconstructed between 2018 and 2023, as “one of Pickering’s cherished waterfront gems.” Known for offering access to the water, the space also boasts walking trails, public art, public washrooms, a picnic area, a beach, a fishing area and an accessible canoe and kayak launch.
According to the city, recent upgrades at the park include new layby parking, the connection of the waterfront trail through the park, a picnic area and interpretive kiosk, shoreline restoration, new walkways, lighting, and a comfort station.
After hosting a consultation with the public last month, the city is offering residents a chance to weigh in on the paddle sport proposal through an online survey.
Should the idea come to fruition, vendors would be able to offer non-motorized paddle sport crafts (think kayaks, canoes and paddleboards) for rent at the park. The rentals would be available on a seasonal basis, most likely from May until September.
The survey asks residents several questions, including how often they go to the park, whether they use the boat launch, whether they would approve of the inclusion of a permanent storage unit or rack for the equipment, and whether they’re in favour of a paddle sport rental program.
The survey will close on Sept. 8.
