Parking ticket scam underway in Whitby

The Town of Whitby is warning residents of a text message scam which claims to be collecting money for parking tickets.
The warning came on June 5 after Whitby received reports of the scam. The texts ask residents to pay outstanding parking fines.
“The Town of Whitby does not send text messages about parking violations or tickets. If you receive such messages, do not click on any links or provide personal information,” Whitby warned.
Town parking tickets range between $15 and $450 depending on the infraction. Residents are able to pay their fines within 15 days of receiving the ticket. By paying the fine, drivers accept the penalty and cannot receive a refund.
However, tickets can be challenged prior to payment online. Reviews must be submitted within 21 days of receiving the ticket. Additionally, drivers can dispute their tickets in court by filing an email challenge or calling 905-430-4322.
Trials are held at the Provincial Offences Court Services at the Durham Region Headquarters at 605 Rossland Road East.
