The Durham College women’s softball team have won their first ever national championship, wrapping up a perfect (29-0) season with a 7-1 gold medal win over Toronto’s Humber College at the 2024 CCSA Nationals in the Ottawa suburb of Carp.

The Lords swept through the group stage, defeating Ottawa, UBC-Okanagan and Toronto by a combined 28-8 score to earn a bye through the quarter-finals, and defeated Western 11-0 in the semifinal en route to the gold medal game.

The national gold medal game would be Durham’s fourth meeting with Humber across all softball competitions this season after winning three times in OCAA action.

Durham had nine hits in the game, including three from Grace Hearns who went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Hearns was named player of the game.

Peyton Jones threw 101 pitches over seven innings, striking out 12. She was named most valuable player for the championship.

The win is Durham’s sixth medal at the CCSA nationals, to go along with two bronze (2010, 2011) and three silver (2012, 2018, 2023).

Durham will now turn their focus to the 2024 OCAA Women’s Softball Championship, which is being hosted in Oshawa at Babcock Field this week.
