A one-time regional councillor and long-time community activist in Pickering has died.

Peter Rodrigues, who served as Ward 3 Regional Councillor from 2010-2014 and was Pickering-Uxbridge MP Jennifer O’Connell’s fiscal manager during her successful run to a federal seat, died last Thursday at Markham Stouffville Hospital.

Pickering Mayor Kevin Ashe made the announcement at the beginning of Monday’s Council meeting, saying Council had “lost a former member” while asking for a moment of silence.

“He was very well known to council and city staff prior to his election,” Ashe said. “He was very involved in the community.”

A Whitevale resident, Rodrigues was involved in environmental groups like Land Over Landings and sat on several committees during his term on Council, including the Rouge Park Alliance.

His background was in the computer field and he spent three decades working in the sector.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been made public.
